When your skin changes and nobody really talks about it: finding familiarity in changing skin
One thing I’ve noticed as a beauty therapist is women often apologise before they talk about their skin.
They laugh.
They minimise it.
They say things like—
“I know it sounds silly…”
“It’s only skin…”
“I shouldn’t care…”
But then they describe something that feels bigger than skin.
They talk about not recognising themselves.
About doing everything they’ve always done and it not feeling the same anymore.
About suddenly feeling dry and breaking out.
Sensitive and congested.
Flat and reactive.
And underneath all of it there’s often this quiet question:
Did I do something wrong?
I don’t think most people are actually asking for perfect skin.
I think they’re asking for familiarity.
For comfort.
For that feeling of looking in the mirror and feeling like themselves again.
And I wonder if sometimes the hardest part isn’t the skin change.
It’s feeling like nobody prepared you for it.
Because skin changes.
Bodies change.
Needs change.
That doesn’t mean your skin failed.
It doesn’t mean you need to throw everything out and start again.
It might just mean your skin wants something different now.
Not more.
Not stronger.
Maybe less interruption.
Maybe more support.
Maybe more hydration.
Maybe fewer layers competing for attention.
Not because mature skin is weak.
Not because hormones ruin skin.
But because skin in different seasons may ask for different things.
We aren’t robots.
Skin changes.
Bodies change.
Needs change.
And I don’t think people should feel like they failed every time their skin asks for something different.
That’s part of why I created NUA.
Not to promise transformation.
Not to ask women to chase younger.
Just to create skincare that feels supportive through change.
Something steady.
Something simple.
Something that lets skin feel cared for without becoming another thing on your list.
Because I don’t think anyone in this season needs more pressure.
I think they need to feel understood.
