The Smallest Possible Routine

The Smallest Possible Routine

3 min read

When someone tells me they've tried everything, the first thing I usually suggest is that they try almost nothing.

Not forever.

Just long enough to hear what their skin sounds like when it isn't being asked to respond to twelve different things at once.

That quiet is where we begin.

I've been thinking about this a lot over the years — about the idea of the smallest possible routine.

Not as a compromise.

Not as something to do until you're ready for a more complicated regimen.

But as a philosophy.

For many people, the foundation of healthy skin is simpler than they've been led to believe.

It needs to be cleansed gently.

It needs hydration.

It needs support.

Everything beyond that should have a reason.

Sometimes that reason is a specific skin concern. Sometimes it's a treatment plan. But sometimes it's simply more complexity than the skin needs to carry.

And complexity has a cost.

I've watched this play out hundreds of times.

Someone simplifies their routine — often reluctantly, because it feels as though they're giving something up — and within a few weeks their skin feels calmer than it has in years.

Not because the products they removed were bad.

But because their skin finally had room to do what it was already trying to do.

Not the longest routine.

Not the most sophisticated.

Simply the smallest routine that consistently leaves your skin feeling comfortable, supported and like itself.

That's the routine worth keeping.

Because a routine you can sustain will almost always be more valuable than a perfect routine you abandon.

In my experience, consistency is rarely built by adding more.

It's built by making care small enough to fit into real life.

If you're not sure where to begin, begin there.

One gentle cleanser.

One supportive moisturiser.

Used consistently.

Then notice.

Notice what your skin does when it isn't constantly adapting to something new.

Notice what changes.

Notice what doesn't.

Let the next step — if there is one — come from that observation.

Not from a recommendation.

Not from someone else's routine.

From what your own skin is quietly telling you.

Sometimes, that's enough.

If you're looking for a place to begin, a gentle cleanser and a barrier-supporting moisturiser is all you need. Calm Cleanse or Pure Gel Cleanse, paired with Barrier Restore.
